Ask your representative to sign a letter supporting increased funding for Adoption Opportunities Program

Ask your representative to sign a letter supporting increased funding for Adoption Opportunities Program!

The Adoption Opportunities program offers states, counties, tribes, and private organizations with the opportunity to invest in local, evidence-based solutions to finding and supporting families for children and teens in foster care by funding programs ranging from post-adoption services to caseworker training.

We need to expand these programs, and you can help. The Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations subcommittee is considering increasing funding for the Adoption Opportunities program. A Dear Colleague letter from Representatives Langevin and Bacon advocating for increased funding is making its way through the US House of Representatives — and it needs your Representative's support! To ask your Congressperson to sign this letter:

  1. Find their contact information here.
  2. Copy and paste the sample letter below into an email. Feel free to add a personal story about the positive effect of adoption-related programs and services on your life.
  3. Send the email to your Representative and tell those in your networks to do the same!

Note: The deadline to reach out to your representative is Friday, March 22.

Subject: Sign the Adoption Opportunities Program Appropriations Dear Colleague Letter Today!

Text: Dear Representative [Fill in name here],

I’m writing to urge you to support continued federal investment in adoption from foster care by cosigning a letter lead by Representatives James R. Langevin (D-RI) and Don Bacon (R- NE) to the Chair and Ranking Member of the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Subcommittee.

The Adoption Opportunities program provides a unique opportunity for states, counties, tribes, and private organizations to invest in locally designed, evidence-based solutions to find families for children and teens in foster care and to support adoptive families. From adoptive family recruitment to post-adoption services and caseworker training, Adoption Opportunities funds essential programs that help achieve permanency for children and youth.

Investing in these services not only improves the quality of life for children, but it also results in long-term government and societal savings. The Annie E. Casey Foundation estimates that for every young person who ages out of the foster care system, taxpayers and communities will pay $300,000 in social costs over that person’s lifetime. Finding permanent families for these youth will ensure better outcomes and substantial savings.

Demonstrate your support in the belief that every child deserves to have a permanent, loving family by signing the Adoption Opportunities Program Dear Colleague letter.

To sign on or learn more, please contact either Kerry McKittrick in Representative Langevin’s office at kerry.mckittrick@mail.house.gov or Rachel Pearce in Representative Bacon’s office at rachel.pearce@mail.house.gov.

Deadline: Friday, March 22

Thank you,
