One of Kinship Center’s summer highlights was the annual therapeutic camp for adoptive families.

For the past nine years, Kinship Center and Santa Clara County Department of Social Services have partnered to bring Camp PAKK (Parents Adopting Kids Kamp) to families who have adopted children from Santa Clara County’s foster care system.

This year’s weekend residence camp was held in August at Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, CA, the usual site of the camp. Parents and their children enjoyed activities and workshops geared to support them as a family and enhance parenting skills and family unity.  Parent faculty included Dr. Joseph Crumbley, Debbie Riley, MFT and Laura Ornelas, LCSW, all experts in the field of adoption and mental health.  In addition, two parent support staff members, both adoptive parents, were on hand to spend time with parents who wanted to talk about their individual circumstances.

Other staff ran children’s groups and provided adoption-focused activities for children and teens, complementary to what their parents were learning. The many activities, a special family project, and this unique family time away from home all provided an opportunity for families to incorporate new skills and a different appreciation of each other.

Feedback from the families was extremely positive and most hope they will have this opportunity again next year. Kinship Center looks forward to celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Camp PAKK in 2011.  Special thanks to Santa Clara County for continuing to value this experience for their families, and for partnering with Kinship Center to make it happen.
