National TV Event To Help Kids Find Permanent Homes
Kinship Center has been invited to participate as an affiliate in a national television event to help find homes for the nation’s 107,000 children waiting in foster care. The event is part of National Adoption Awareness Month, a national celebration each November to raise awareness and help children in foster care find permanent, loving homes through adoption.
On November 19, many of these foster children will join celebrities and entertainers during a 3 hour television special The Stars Are Out Tonight…for the Kids. The national event will be carried live by DISCOVERY – Fit and Health Channel (check your local listings) on DISH network (ch. 457 & 471) and on DIRECTV (ch. 261). Check local listings for times.
Kinship Center has been asked to be a regional partner of the production in accepting screened referrals from interested individuals who are potential adopters. Kinship Center will accept the calls, perform the studies, and work with the potential adoptive families. There is a possibility that Kinship Center facilities throughout California will be able contribute stories of local waiting children to the show, and also highlight some adoptive family stories.
Mark Van Loucks, Executive Producer says, “We will be introducing celebrities, entertainers and lots of surprises during the show.”
There will also be live cut-ins from The Adoption Exchange Fantasy Ball in Denver, a gala where the community is gathering to raise awareness about foster children who wait for permanent families. The Adoption Exchange is an organization that provides expertise and support before, during, and after the adoption process. This is just one of the “watch parties” held around the country during the show. Viewers may call in to find out more about the children or to donate to the cause at 1-800-451-5246.
“Each of these children is a gift. It is through adoption that ordinary people give their hearts and homes to these children to make extraordinary families,” says Dr. Dixie Davis, Executive Director of the Adoption Exchange. “Families who love the children for who they are and who they will become. Children like Joe who is a senior in high school. ‘My mom saved our lives by adopting us. She gave us a second chance at life and it is the most rewarding feeling ever.’”
