Generosity from California Business Provides Essentials for Kids

“Not everyone can be a foster parent, but anyone can help a foster child.” This is the driving motivation of Sleep Train Mattress Company’s Charitable Program, which provides new clothes, pajamas, shoes and toys to the more than 60,000 children growing up in the foster care system in California.  For the past two years Kinship Center has received and distributed thousands of dollars’ worth of these items desperately needed by local children.

“Every time I open a shipment from Sleep Train I can see a specific child in this coat, or that dress,” says Nancy Murphy, left, Director of Placement at Kinship Center. “The need is so great that each delivery is precious.  Every donated article makes a difference in a child’s life.”

Murphy points out that for a foster child who has very little, new clothes can make that child feel special.  “Being able to show up at school in new clothes, or having a pair of new shoes, helps build a child’s self-worth.  Children in the foster care system yearn, above all, to be just like the other kids.”

With the support of local communities, each year Kinship Center helps more than 2,000 abused, neglected and abandoned children become part of safe, new, loving families. Sleep Train Mattress Company, based in northern California, is an important community partner. The company promotes ongoing collection drives throughout California to meet foster children’s ongoing need for clothes, shoes and other necessities. Child welfare organizations such as Kinship Center help distribute these contributions to children in need. Parents of foster children are particularly grateful for this help, as foster care stipends provide only the basics. In a climate of reduced public funding, these stipends often can’t meet the needs of a growing child.

“Kids grow!” says Murphy. “We love to see the smiles on their faces when they receive these heartfelt gifts of new clothes that actually fit – and help them fit in. We are so appreciative of Sleep Train’s community spirit and generosity.”
