Among the featured speakers at the Child S.H.A.R.E. Lewis B. Smedes 2011 Conference on Foster Care and Adoption, held November 5 in Los Angeles, was Kinship Center Division Director Allison Maxon.

Maxon, first speaker of the day, spoke on “Making the Case for Permanency.”

An experienced speaker and national trainer for Kinship Center, Maxon is a clinician, educator and advocate specializing in adoption/ permanency, attachment and trauma. She is passionate about creating Systems of Care that are permanency competent and strength-based.  She recently presented at the prestigious Georgetown University National Symposium on Children’s Mental Health Systems of Care Conference on Kinship Center’s clinical competencies of “permanency” focused, attachment-based mental health services for children who have experienced trauma, neglect and/or loss. Maxon is the co-author and master trainer of  Kinship Center’s ACT: An Adoption and Permanency Curriculum for Child Welfare and Mental Health Professional and she is the co-author and master trainer of Pathways to Permanence: Parenting the Child of Loss and Trauma. She is the creator of The Ten Things Your Child Needs Everyday, a Kinship Center DVD with tools that help parents/caregivers strengthen their attachment relationship with their child.

The conference included other conference presentations of significant interest to parents and professionals, such as the neurobiology of attachment, accessing the children’s court system, record keeping and safety, managing finances as a foster parent, commuicating about adoption, transracial adoptions, and others.  Click here to see a list of featured conference speakers.
Conference host Child S.H.A.R.E. supports and encourages families and individuals as they provide foster care. The nonprofit provides understanding of the overarching picture of the foster care system; to dismantle myths and false preconceptions of the foster system; to understand concerns related to foster and adoptive parenting; to understanding the rewards of foster parenting; and to assist in choosing an appropriate licensing agency.
