Kinship Center’s Empower through Play Initiative

Every child deserves the chance to connect and grow in a safe and loving environment, but making connections and building strong familial relationships can be derailed by the effects of trauma, loss, or separation. While expressing frustration, establishing trust, and communicating emotions in a healthy fashion might come easily for some, youth coping with symptoms of trauma may need explicit coaching, and their caregivers or family may need to be taught to navigate the manifestations of trauma as well. It is these families who need extra support to create lasting and loving homes.
In partnership with Santa Lucia Rotary and Rotary International, Kinship Center launched the Empower through Play initiative which aims to support children and families in Monterey County to prevent and mediate conflict, heal from trauma, and help build strong relationships in their own lives and in their communities.
Children, especially those who have experienced trauma, are rarely best served by the talk therapy that is so helpful for adults. Children’s therapeutic needs are far more effectively served through interactive, experiential, cognitive behavioral or play-based therapies that engage them outside of clinic settings (Slade & Warne 2016). The Empower through Play initiative focus is to equip child-serving mental health counselors and clinicians with the tools they need to best serve their clients, and it allow for a greater number of youth and families to receive this vital intervention, regardless of their eligibility for publically-funded services.
Empower through Play provides families, youth, and caregivers with the tools they need to better understand and cope with trauma and stress, increase their compassion and resiliency, improve the likelihood of maintaining a permanent home, and handle the unique challenges they may face on the road to adulthood.
