Click the picture below to watch a video of Daniel Heimpel, Project Director for Fostering Media Connections, on NBC’s MassAppeal. He is discussing some of the issues that chidren in foster care face when it comes to their education. Heimpel is joined by Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) President and CEO Christine James-Brown, discussing permanency for foster youth to help educaitonal outcomes for these children. Topics discussed include trauma, abuse, and how multiple moves negatively impact a child’s ability to have the consistency they need in school to be successful. Heimpel and James-Brown also give suggestions as to how the general public can help kids in foster care, even if they’re not able to be a foster parent. Some ideas include volunteering to be a mentor to foster youth – both in person an over the internet and also providing respite for foster parents.
